Carl Jung's Interpretation:

In Jungian theory, the symbol of a 'woman' may be viewed as a representation of the Anima, the feminine inner personality that is found in the unconscious of a male. This Anima is the conduit through which psychic energy finds expression in a man's life. This energy may manifest itself in dreams as a range of female characters, from the motherly figure to the seductress, symbolising a man's journey towards integration and wholeness. Dream figures perceived as female, are therefore signals that the dreamer's unconscious is active, suggesting that inner development, or individuation, is in progress.

James Hillman's Interpretation:

Hillman would see the 'woman' as an image of the soul, rather than a mere psychological construct. In Hillman's concept of 'soul-making', the individual and everything they encounter, including dreams, are considered primarily as images, carrying their own inherent meaning. So, the appearance of a woman would not be reduced to what it might represent, but rather viewed as a call to delve deeper into subjective experience. Thus, a female figure in a dream is part of the living texture of the psyche and serves a greater purpose in the dreamer's understanding of their world.

Classical Interpretation:

Classic interpretations frequently represent women in dreams as facets of femininity, ranging from caretaking instincts, to sensuality and desire, to emotional resilience. They are often associated with the dreamer's relationship with his/her feelings, intuition, or maternal characteristics.

Ancient Greek Interpretation:

In ancient Greek dream interpretation, women often embodied natural forces or divine entities, like Gaia, the personification of Earth, or Hera, the goddess of women, marriage, and family. They also frequently symbolised care and nourishment, but could also reflect aspects of manipulation and trickery.

Morphology:

A 'woman' symbol in a dreamscape may take a variety of forms and structures, from 'the crone' to 'the maiden'. The form the woman takes helps to amplify the message they carry, be it nurturing (mother), wisdom (crone), or new beginnings (maiden).
