Dream Symbol:

Bowl

Carl Jung's Interpretation:

According to my interpretation of Carl Jung's theories, the bowl symbol in a dream can be seen as a representation of the self; the inner psyche embracing its contents. The bowl is emblematic of the vast breadth of conscious and unconscious experiences, resembling Jung's conceptualization of the Collective Unconscious and the Personal Unconscious. Jung believed that all humans share a residue of ancestral experiences (Archetypes), embodied in symbols like the bowl. The shape of the bowl could furthermore be considered as indicating a need for receptiveness, willingness to understand unconscious insights.

James Hillman's Interpretation:

Hillman, following a more soul-centered imaginal perspective, breaks from the dogma of singular meaning ascribed by other theories. The bowl in a dream could be seen as a vessel that exists not to be filled by ideas or objects, but rather serves as an invitation for us to think metaphorically. It could represent the capacity of the soul to hold complexity, paradox, and tension and an urge from the unconscious, to pay attention to the nurturing elements within us that we need to cultivate. Further examination would involve understanding the dreamer's subjective experience with bowls.

Classical Interpretation:

Classically, bowl in dreams represents emotions and healing. It's often linked to introspection, comfort, and the nourishment of one's soul. It can symbolize abundance and celebration as well as scarcity and emptiness based on its state in the dream—whether filled or empty.

Ancient Greek Interpretation:

In Greek mythology, the bowl often symbolized the containers of life - a vessel holding the experiences and essence of existence. The myth of Pandora's box, despite popularized as a box, was actually Pandora's Jar or Bowl, embodying all of life's gifts and torments.

Morphology:

The bowl, orbicular, generally demonstrates completion, wholeness, inclusiveness and protection, often seen as feminine shape. Variables in the dream (material of the bowl, its state, what it contains) may indicate different aspects or needs of the dreamer's personality.
