Dream Symbol:

Aquarium

Carl Jung's Interpretation:

For Jung, an aquarium can signify the unconscious itself – an enclosed space where life exists, the miniature equivalent of a vast ocean. The vibrant ecosystem within suggests the dynamism of the psyche, teeming with archetypes and synchronized souls. It might also be seen as a 'collective unconscious', a miniaturized, lucid form of larger marine life that bridges the gap between our conscious mind and the deeper layers of our psyche. Aquariums embody a sense of contemplation and introspection, indicative of the need to seek insight and understand our subconscious instincts and motivations. In particular, the fish in the aquarium may represent the 'anima' or 'animus', the Jungian aspects of the unconscious mind that embody the masculine or feminine attributes which lie dormant in the dreamer.

James Hillman's Interpretation:

Hillman would approach the aquarium as a symbol of an individual's psychic state, specifically in terms of the imaginary and soul-making aspects. The fact that we encase and encapsulate something as wild and natural as marine life into a confined, artificial environment is an attempt to grasp and make sense of our more primitive, oceanic psyche. The clear glass walls of the aquarium bear witness to our desire for transparency and lucidity, in probing the depths of our soul. However, the very act of observing alters the observed, and here Hillman may very well caution us against too voyeuristic or controlling an approach towards our psyche.

Classical Interpretation:

Classically, the aquarium overlaps in symbolism with water, representing emotion, intuition, and the deeper currents of the psyche. As an artificial containment of marine life, it also denotes man's attempt to dominate and control nature. The inclusion of different species and elements within, points to diversity, interconnectivity and coexistence, or our ability to cultivate a variety of emotions and thoughts within ourselves.

Ancient Greek Interpretation:

In ancient Greek mythology, water was a primal force, inhabited by various god-like creatures, symbolizing mystery, change, and wisdom. Therefore, an aquarium, housing smaller versions of these beings, might signify our need to subdue and understand these primal emotions and instincts.

Morphology:

The aquarium is a quadrilateral shape, with clear flat surfaces showcasing life within. Morphological analysis reveals it as a structure that enframes motion and life, symbolizing observational control, protection and cultivation.
